Consumer Rights, Foreclosure and Rescue Scams Legislative Advocacy and Community Outreach

Predatory lending practices in the housing market have had a significant negative impact in weakening the American and World economy. Predatory lending covers practices such as: deceptive, high-cost loans with excessive interest rates, fees and penalties; home equity stripping schemes; and rescue scams, among others. Homeowners see their equity stripped away, while others loose their homes in foreclosures. In short, the system is out of balance. There is a chain of responsibility that makes these abusive loans possible. For the sake of the homeowners who are being victimized, and specially those who are more vulnerable due to their socioeconomic circumstance, consumer attorneys have given priority to this issue. Since LACCF cannot represent all consumers, in accordance to current Florida Legal Services (FLS) priorities, we are working with the Legislative and Executive branches to promote a positive change in the system. Moreover, LACCF is empowering consumers by reaching the most vulnerable communities and giving them to tools to prevent victimization by predatory lenders and unscrupulous industry scammers.

Civil Rights & Community Organizing

We work with organizations like the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Hispanic Bar Association of Central Florida, Inc. (HBACF), ACORN Housing, Florida Legal Services (FLS) partners, Public Interest Umbrella Groups, and private attorneys in civil rights initiatives concerning discrimination based on economic status, race, religion, color, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, familial / marital status and prior arrest / conviction record.

Disability Rights/Special Education Community Outreach

We partner with the Special Education SLU of Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, Inc., and Project Grupo de Apoyo de Padres (GAP), a community outreach effort that empowers Hispanic parents and students in the area of disability and special education rights.
